January Protocol Gathering

On January 17th CUPE 951 sponsored an indigenous protocol gathering which saw close to 30 people enjoy the food, information and mingling that was part of the noon hour event.

The idea came from members who attended last year’s Provost’s Diversity Research forum, and they asked if we could provide more information about the protocols of the territory and also the role of elders at gatherings.

The CUPE Human Rights and Equity Issues committee organized and planned the event with the idea of holding it before this year’s diversity research forum to be held on January 26/27.

Deb George, who is the Cultural Protocol Liaison from the First Peoples House, spoke to us and answered the many questions from our members.

The feedback was very positive and we would like to thank Deb for agreeing to be part of our gathering.

We also offered muskeg tea and bannock to everyone, with different kinds of jam. The feedback was positive and delicious.

In conclusion, thanks to everyone who attended and thanks to our local for sponsoring the gathering and for including the territory welcome at all of our public events- I know the people, from here, very much appreciate that we do this.
