CUPE 951 Human Rights and Equity Issues Committee Report

HREI started the year very productively – on January 17 we sponsored a protocol gathering which saw close to 30 people participate and enjoy food, information and mingling for the one hour noon event. Deb George, the Cultural Protocol Liaison from the First Peoples House spoke to us about the traditional history of the land the protocol of the Lekwungen speaking people and the role of Elders at  various events. We also offered tasty muskeg tea and bannock for all the participants.

HREI worked closely with the CUPE 951 president to issue a statement regarding travel ban and the unsettling issues happening in United Stated and North America in general earlier in the year.

In June we had to say goodbye to our chair Dale Whitford who retired and left the university – Dale has been the driving force of the committee and we are missing him dearly.

HREI participated at the CUPE BBQ event and provided human rights posters and other information to the members.

HREI chair attended Victoria Pride Parade with first vice-president, chief steward and communication chair.

HREI is always looking for new members who are interested in human rights and equity issues so if you are interested in joining the committee please contact Jeta at jetarp@uvic.ca
