Recognizing Our Past President

Bill Johnston, former president of CUPE 951, retired from the University of Victoria in April after an impressive 33 years of service.

While he was no longer a CUPE member, our Local felt it was important to recognize the work and service Bill provided while he was a member — including his negotiating our much-loved annual paid December closure.

On April 30th, about 50 friends, family, and coworkers gathered at Campus Security Services to wish him well and enjoy the barbecue being hosted in Bill’s honor.

Our acting president, Pat Shade, ducked out of ourĀ general meeting, passing the gavel to another executive member in order to present Bill with a certificate of recognition — actually, two certificates.

The first was recreated from the archives, looking back, waaaay back, to when Bill was president of 951. Once the laughs settled down, a more modern and official certificate of recognition was presented. Bill accepted both with a smile.

You can read more about Bill as one of the members profiled in our CUPE 951 50 Stories Project.
