Black History Month

Black History month is a time to reflect on the ongoing work still to be done to encourage and uphold black excellence, both at UVic and beyond. This year CUPE is honoring Carol Wall, a Black feminist and union leader. Bookmarks with information on Carol will be available shortly at the front desk of the MacPherson library. The IDEA committee also has a number of pins, stickers, and other goods celebrating Black History Month. Please reach out to anyone on the committee if you would like to have one!

UVic is holding a number of Black History month events, for a full list of all events please see here: https://www.uvic.ca/significant-days/black-history.php. Our committee would like to highlight the important work being done by the Scarborough Charter Committee.

Our work to fight racism, acknowledge the racist history of black enslavement, and to address ongoing discrimination in Canada is a continual project. The local organization BC Black History Awareness Society has excellent educational resources, such as their digital museum on BC’s Black Pioneers.

In solidarity,

The CUPE 951 IDEA Committee
