Communications Update September 2013

Many thanks to those who came to the September General Meeting today — and thanks especially to everyone who stood for elections. We filled all the positions and currently have a full executive, although there is now a vacancy for a Trustee (to be elected at the October General Meeting)

I am now stepping up from “acting” to “elected” Communications Chair (thank you!). Over the summer, I assessed our existing communications tools and recommended to the Executive a strategy to go forward. At the top of that list was a redesign of the local’s website at cupe951.ca. I am pleased to say that while the content of the website is still a work in progress the redesign was completed over the Labour Day long weekend.

Key benefits to the new site are:

  • clean design with large font for ease of visibility
  • viewable across all platforms and all devices (mobile ready!)
  • simplified architecture
  • easier to edit and update with revision tracking

If there is something you expect to find on the website but is missing or something you always thought should have been available, please let me know: cdewolfe@uvic.ca.

If you are interested in getting involved with the communications committee, we are always on the lookout for enthusiastic members with an eye for media, copywriting, photography and editing or an interest in learning more about these skills.

Upcoming tasks include building an orientation package for new members and building a media kit for outreach as well as staying on top of changes in online media and communications and making sure our message gets to our members as quickly and efficiently as possible!

Email regarding any communications issue is always welcome: suggestions, questions, or criticisms.
