Elections for Executive Board and Delegates

This month we have vacancies on the Executive Board and we also have upcoming elections for delegates to convention.

  • We will be electing up to five delegates for CUPE BC April 18-21, 2018
  • For the Executive Board we are seeking a Treasurer and an Education Chair.
  • We are also looking for people to step into roles on the Job Evaluation Committee and as a Trustee.
  • We will be electing and appointing members to the Agreement Study Committee very soon and the Bargaining Committee in the near future!

Please refer to the ByLaws or talk to an officer if you’d like more detail about the commitment required for these volunteer positions.

Eligibility for both is similar and is outlined in our ByLaws. Under the current ByLaws (2012), section 7 outlines eligibility for office:

To be eligible as a Union Officer, Steward, member of the Negotiating Committee, or chair of a committee, members will have attended at least fifty percent of the General meetings held in the previous twelve months or five meetings if they have been a member for less than a year. When there is no qualified nominee, the President may waive this requirement with the approval of the membership. Child Care members who are unable to attend General meetings will be considered eligible providing they have attended an equivalent number of Union meetings held at Child Care services.

Section 17A outlines eligibility for delegates:

To be eligible as a delegate, nominees will have attended at least three (3) General meetings held in the previous twelve months. Where an election is to take place at a General Meeting, nominees will be in attendance at the meeting or have allowed to be filed at the meeting their consent in writing. When there are no eligible nominees, the President may ask the members at the meeting for a motion to waive this requirement. Child Care members who are unable to attend General meetings will be considered eligible providing they have attended an equivalent number of Union meetings held at Child Care services.

Bear in mind that if not enough people step up, that those who haven’t attended the threshold of meetings may have that requirement waived by the President. Please also plan to attend to vote for those you would like to see representing our local — we need quorum to have these elections!
